 Shopify vs Indian Ecommerce Platforms

Shopify is a strong global ecommerce platform, and for many sellers it is a good choice. For Indian merchants, the comparison with India-focused platforms comes down to a handful of practical differences: how GST invoices are produced, which payment gateway you use and what it costs on top, what support is available and when, how pricing behaves as your sales grow, and whether your shop, shipping and accounting fit together without extra apps.

This guide compares Shopify with Indian ecommerce platforms fairly. Every statement about Shopify below comes from Shopify's own help, pricing and support pages, checked on 3 October 2026, and is linked so you can read it yourself. ShopMate is an Indian platform and the publisher of this guide, so we have a commercial interest. We have tried to say clearly where Shopify is the better fit and where our own platform has limits.

Quick answer: Shopify suits sellers who want a large global ecosystem, plan to sell internationally or have developers to extend the store. India-focused platforms such as ShopMate suit sellers who want GST invoices, Razorpay payments, Indian couriers and an offline POS built in, with assisted setup. For a typical Indian small business selling domestically, compare total monthly cost at your expected sales, including GST invoicing and payment fees, and test both with real orders.

How we compared

We limited Shopify claims to what Shopify itself states on its India pages. Where we have not verified something, such as the exact range of Indian courier integrations, we say "check in your trial" rather than guess. Plans and prices change, so confirm them on the day you decide. Shopify figures below are as shown on its pages on 3 October 2026.

What Shopify does well

  • A global platform with a large app marketplace. Shopify's App Store lets you add features, including GST invoicing apps, when the core product does not provide them.
  • Published plans in rupees. Its India pricing page lists the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans in rupees, with monthly and yearly billing options and a trial that starts with 3 free days and then ₹20 a month for 3 months.
  • Chat support around the clock. Shopify says chat is available 24/7 on all plans (Shopify, Contact Shopify Support).
  • Room to grow and to sell abroad. A global platform can suit brands planning international sales or heavy customisation with developers.

What Indian sellers should check carefully

1. GST invoices

Shopify's own help page on GST in India states: "Shopify doesn't create a GST-compliant bill. To create a GST-compliant bill, use a local third-party GST invoicing service or an app from the Shopify App Store" (Shopify, GST in India). It also says the initial tax settings "are provided only as a starting point, and aren't intended to be used until they've been reviewed and updated", and that HSN codes can be stored in the HS tariff code field, which requires at least six digits, with shorter codes stored as metafields or tags. In practice, an Indian seller on Shopify typically adds a third-party invoicing app, which has its own cost and setup, and reviews the tax settings carefully.

Why this matters: once your turnover crosses the threshold set by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, ₹40 lakh for suppliers of goods and ₹20 lakh for suppliers of services, with lower limits in some special category states (CBIC, GST: An Update), every order needs a correct invoice. Confirm the current position on the official GST portal and with a chartered accountant.

2. Payment gateways

Shopify Payments, Shopify's own payment service, is available in a list of countries that does not include India. Shopify's page says that if your country is not listed, "you need to use a third-party payment provider" (Shopify, Supported countries for Shopify Payments). Indian stores therefore use a third-party gateway such as Razorpay, which supports UPI, cards, net banking, EMI and wallets.

This is workable, but it adds a cost. Shopify's India pricing page lists a rate for third-party payment providers on each plan: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. That is separate from the gateway's own charges. Because Shopify Payments is not available in India, this rate is likely to apply to Indian stores using an outside gateway; confirm with Shopify before you commit.

3. Support channels

Chat is available 24/7 on all plans. Shopify's support page also says phone support and email support are limited to the Plus and Retail plans, with typical email response times of 48 hours, and that you cannot request a callback or phone Shopify directly on other plans (Shopify, Contact Shopify Support). For some merchants, chat is enough. Others, especially first-time sellers, value a person they can phone or a team that sets things up for them.

4. Indian couriers, cash on delivery and POS

We have not verified the range of Indian courier integrations, cash on delivery handling, or point-of-sale availability and pricing on Shopify in India, and they can depend on apps or partners. Ask for these specifically in a trial: pincode serviceability, rate comparison, label printing, returns and COD remittance, and whether your offline sales and online stock can share one inventory.

A cost illustration: platform charges at different sales levels

The table below compares platform charges only, using Shopify's India prices as shown on 3 October 2026 (yearly billing) and ShopMate's published commission. It is an illustration with assumed sales, not a quote:

Monthly salesShopify Basic (₹1,499 plus 2% of sales)Shopify Grow (₹5,599 plus 1% of sales)ShopMate (5% of sales, before GST)
₹50,000₹2,499₹6,099₹2,500
₹2,00,000₹5,499₹7,599₹10,000
₹10,00,000₹21,499₹15,599₹50,000

What the table shows, honestly: at low sales the two are close, and at about ₹50,000 a month the platform charges are almost equal to Shopify Basic. As sales grow, Shopify's lower percentage means it costs less in platform charges, and the gap widens at high volumes. The break-even points follow from simple arithmetic: Basic against ShopMate at roughly ₹50,000 a month (1,499 divided by 0.03), and Grow against ShopMate at roughly ₹1.4 lakh a month (5,599 divided by 0.04).

The table leaves out items that change the total:

  • On Shopify: a GST invoicing app or service, other apps and themes, any applicable taxes on the subscription, POS costs, and the payment gateway's own charges.
  • On ShopMate: 18% GST on the commission, and the payment gateway's own charges. If you are GST-registered, ask your accountant how GST on platform fees is treated.
  • On both: courier charges, which depend on your parcels and not on the platform.

ShopMate's commission covers items that are separate on many platforms: the storefront, GST invoicing, POS, analytics, procurement tools and assisted onboarding, with no setup fee. Whether that is worth the higher percentage depends on your volume and on how much you would otherwise pay for apps, services and your own time. Our guide to commission versus monthly plans explains how to run this calculation with your own numbers.

When Shopify is likely the better choice

  • You plan to sell internationally or in several currencies as a main part of the business.
  • You or your agency have developers and want the widest choice of apps and themes.
  • Your monthly sales are high enough that a lower percentage fee saves meaningful money.
  • You are comfortable setting up the store yourself and relying on chat support.
  • You prefer a globally established platform brand.

When an India-focused platform is likely the better choice

  • You sell mainly within India and want GST invoices without a separate app.
  • You want Razorpay, UPI, cash on delivery and Indian couriers working from day one.
  • You have a physical shop and want one stock system across online and offline.
  • You would like a team to help with domain, payments and shipping setup.
  • You prefer to pay only when you sell, with no setup fee or fixed monthly charge.
  • You are at an early or mid sales level, where the commission is comparable or lower.

Questions to ask either platform

  1. What is the total monthly cost at my expected sales, including apps, gateway fees and taxes?
  2. Can I see a sample GST invoice for a UPI order and a cash on delivery order?
  3. Which couriers connect, and how do pincode checks, rate comparison, returns and COD remittance work?
  4. Where do my settlements go, and who holds the payment gateway account?
  5. What support can I reach, through which channels, and at what hours?
  6. If I sell offline too, can I use one inventory?
  7. How do I export my products, customers and orders if I leave?
  8. Is there a contract, and what is the cancellation process?

How to run a fair test

  1. Open a trial on each platform and load the same ten products.
  2. Connect a payment gateway and place UPI, card and cash on delivery test orders.
  3. Generate a GST invoice and ask your accountant to review it.
  4. Book a test shipment to a serviceable and an unserviceable pincode.
  5. Contact support with a real question outside office hours.
  6. Add up every cost line at your expected sales, and compare totals, not headline prices.

Where ShopMate fits, and its limits

ShopMate is a multi-tenant ecommerce platform built for Indian merchants. Each merchant gets an isolated, branded storefront and admin panel on their own domain, with Razorpay payments, 40+ shipping partners covering all India pincodes, GST-compliant invoicing, coupons, flash sales, an offline POS, analytics and a procurement module, all available from day one in a single plan (ShopMate). Pricing is a flat 5% commission plus 18% GST on every order, with no setup fee, no yearly maintenance charge and no annual contract (ShopMate pricing).

The limits are real: ShopMate has assisted onboarding rather than instant self-serve sign-up, a smaller ecosystem than a global platform, a commission that costs more than a fixed plan at higher sales, and a short track record, since it launched in 2025 and has 50+ merchants (About ShopMate). Ask for a demo, speak to the team about your category and test the checkout and invoices before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify good for Indian sellers?

It can be, especially for sellers who want a global ecosystem or plan to sell abroad. Indian sellers should check GST invoicing, which Shopify says requires a third-party app or service, the use of a third-party payment gateway, and the support channels available on their plan.

Does Shopify support GST in India?

Shopify lets you set GST tax rates and store HSN codes, but its own help page says it does not create a GST-compliant bill and recommends a local third-party invoicing service or an app from the Shopify App Store.

Is Shopify Payments available in India?

No. India is not in the list of countries that Shopify's help page gives for Shopify Payments, which says that if your country is not listed you need to use a third-party payment provider. Indian stores typically use a gateway such as Razorpay.

Is Shopify cheaper than ShopMate?

It depends on your sales and on extras. On platform charges alone, Shopify Basic and ShopMate are close at about ₹50,000 of monthly sales, and Shopify costs less as sales grow. Add apps, GST invoicing and POS costs to Shopify and the gap narrows. Compare totals at your own expected sales.

Which Indian ecommerce platform is best?

There is no single best platform. Compare options on GST invoicing, payments, shipping coverage, support hours, total cost and data export, and test each with real orders. Our guide to the best ecommerce platform in India provides a scorecard.

Can I move from Shopify to an Indian platform?

Yes, but it takes effort to export products, customers and orders, redirect URLs and retest payments and shipping. Plan the move, keep your product data tidy, and test checkout before switching your domain.
